Metrocrest Democrats Meeting

We had a packed house for a lively forum with the Democratic candidates for Dallas County District Attorney night. Among some of the issues they shared their positions on were the Conviction Integrity Unit's future evolution, bail reform, the effect of changes in grand jury selection, along with their respective plans for possible changes in the DA's office, DNA testing and pre-trial diversion. There were also questions and comments from the audience.

In addition, a number of judges and candidates for judicial benches, along with candidates for JP, County Commissioner and US House District 24 were present. We also had our first opportunity to meet Julie Johnson, our candidate for Texas House District 115 running against Matt Rinaldi.... Go Julie!

Oct. 2nd meeting with Professor Jeffrey EngelMonday, Oct. 2, 2017
Due to a schedule conflict this meeting was not held on our usual 2nd Monday of the month.

Metrocrest Democrats Meeting

We had a wonderful opportunity at our meeting on Monday, October 2 to hear Professor Jeffrey Engel, Director of the Center for Presidential History at SMU, discuss the historical precedent for the attitude, tone and actions of our current president. Andrew Jackson, in the early 19th century, in many ways was remarkably similar, but of course, there weren't nuclear weapon in the world's arsenal at that time.

He then went on to discuss how Donald Trump has begun to shift the paradigm upon which all of American policy since World War has been based--the idea that regionalism contributed to conditions which resulted in the two world wars in the first half of the 20th century. The American response post-war, which continued through all presidents including Barak Obama was to encourage, foster and materially support the development of globalism. With the entrance of our new president, his rejection of the TPP which was intended to support our allies and to prevent China or India from developing a regional presence which would occur in the vacuum left by the absence of a US presence.

Professor Engel concluded with a brief discussion of his perspective on the future of the two parties and the opportunities and dangers facing our party in particular in the face of the splits apparent in the Republican party.

It was a wonderful evening.

Kim OlsonMonday Sept. 11, 2017

Metrocrest Democrats Meeting

Our meeting on September 11 started off a little bumpy when we arrived to find the NewNew Buffet had just lost power along with a number of other businesses in the shopping center. We were able to switch rooms and take advantage of the slightly west facing windows, until about 8:15.

Our speaker Kim Olson, candidate for Texas Agriculture Secretary, was outstanding. She briefly discussed her own 9/11 experience when she was in the Pentagon as it was atracked, and when her husband, a pilot in line to fly that day, was grounded just after the attacks began.

Kim OlsonShe went on to discuss in detail her strategy to get put the vote not just in Democratic majority areas like ours but in parts of the state where aside from partisan affiliation, voters would have good reason to support a progressive rancher against the current Secretary. She outlined some specific programs she would work to implement and how she would help Texas by assisting the farmers and ranchers whose products make up a large percentage our state's GDP.

We also heard from judges Martin Hoffman, Jennifer Bennett, and Carl Ginsberg who are candidates for reelection, along with Jan MacDowell, running against Kenny Marchant, for US House District 24, and Dorotha Ocker, running against Matt Rinaldi for Texas House District 115.

Monday June 12, 2017

Metrocrest Democrats Meeting

We had an interesting evening with Chrustooher Suprun, the Republican Presidential Elector who chose not to vote for Trump, even in the face of death threats.

He urged us to stop focusing on the last election, debating the merits of Hillary vs Bernie, and to look forward to the 2018 elections and to winning 218 seats in the US House in order to effect change -- "218 in 2018."

Mayoral Runoff ForumMay 22, 2017

Mayoral Candidates Runoff Forum

We had this candidates forum at New New Buffet to learn more about the two mayoral candidates for the runoff elections in Carrollton and Farmers Branch. Kevin Falconer and Steve Babick who are running for the Carrollton mayor runoff position talked about themselves and took questions from audience. For the Farmers Branch mayoral runoff election only Robert Dye participated and got to talk to the audience about himself and took questions. His opponent did not agree to attend the forum.

Judge Ken Tapscott speakingMay 15, 2017

Metrocrest Democrats Meeting

Our speaker for May 15th was Dallas County Judge Ken Tapscott, Judge of County-Court-at-law No. 4, who alerted us to the challenges we face in the 2018 election, which are made so much greater because of the attack on the straight ticket vote option by the Texas legislature along with extensive fund raising by the county and state Republican party.

March 2017 Voter Registrar DeputationMarch 13, 2017

Metrocrest Democrats Meeting -
2 programs

Our meeting room was jammed full of people who were eager to be deputized to register voters.  The Voter Registrar Deputation event was conducted
by Dallas County Elections Office.

Many members and friends who were interested to become involved in the voter registration drives to register voters for the upcoming elections and for the 2018 Elections were present. Opportunities to register voters are ongoing all across our county which is a non-partisan position.

March 2017 meetingThe deputation event was followed by an insightful presentation by Sarah Saldana, Director of ICE ((Immigration and Customs Enforcement) during the last two years of the Obama Administration.
She was a reminder of the care and precision used in managing the deportation of undocumented immigrants who had committed serious crimes, ranging from murder and rape to child sexual assault in comparison to the methods used by the Trump administration which results not only in deportation of criminals but also has the collateral effect of tearing apart families caught in the sweeps.

Post Election Meeting Dorotha & Jan cutting the cake

We enjoyed cake, wine and good conversation in good company to celebrate the good work by
Dorotha Ocker (49.05%) and Jan McDowell (46.83% Dallas County portion of district) who discussed their very much improved showing and possible plans for the future. David Griggs, SDEC member for our Senate District 16, gave us a picture of the challenges and opportunities in the upcoming state legislative session, which starts January 10th, in terms of the election success we had across the state and in Dallas County.

We also talked about the many contributions Metrocrest Democrats made both as an organization and through specific efforts by individual members who worked block walking, phone banking, registering voters, and as active precinct chairs, election judges and clerks through the marathon of twelve long days of early voting and on election day. As a growing club in an area with rapidly changing demographics, we are proud of the efforts we have made and the results we have gotten.
We also started to shift our focus to upcoming municipal elections and began thinking in terms of the 2018 mid-term election and the state gubernatorial and legislative election. Though common wisdom says our area is largely Republican, the very positive results of this election for candidates in our area should encourage us to work harder toward success going forward.

Nov. 8, 20163rd Presidential Debate Watch Party

Election Watch

We were excited at the start of the Election watch and the room and in fact the whole restaurant was full of optimistic Democrats.
Most results were beyond disappointing although two Democrats in our area, Dorotha Ocker running for the Texas House won 49.05% and Jan McDowell running for the US House against a long term incumbent won 46.83%, but the pictures and local election results show that there are many, many more Democrats in our area than most would suspect. This bodes well for the future in our area, and in spite of results at the national level we should be encouraged.

September 12 Monthly Meeting

With the Supreme Court at the heart of the Presidential race, Professor Joe Kobylka from SMU Political Science department gave a compelling presentation on the Supreme Court and it's possible future depending on who wins in November.

The takeaway for us should be that EVERY DEMOCRAT NEEDS TO VOTE FOR DEMOCRATS FROM THE TOP TO THE BOTTOM OF THE BALLOT in order to elect Hillary Clinton, to maintain Democratic strength in Dallas County, to elect local Democratic candidates to the US House and to the Texas Statehouse IN ORDER TO GIVE HER THE support she needs at all levels.

We had an exciting evening with Mike Collier and
Cal Jilsson on May 9.

Mike, our former State Comptroller candidate, drove up from Houston to talk to us about the "Raw Deal" Texans have gotten and continue to get from the Republicans who run our state. He offered some thoughts in relation to property taxes and school funding.

Cal Jilsson speakingCal Jilsson, well- known SMU Political Science professor and political commentator, spoke to us about the bottom-up work that needs to be done in order to substantially change election outcomes in Texas.
He also delivered some positive predictions about the upcoming presidential election, and the need for us to focus in on the governor's race in 2018 because of the effect it will have on redistricting in our state following the 2020 census.

The final message is that there is lots of work to be done.

Overall it was a great night!
